Walk and Talk Coaching · Asheville, NC

A lot of people find it easier to say hard things when they're not staring at a wall.

Coaching sessions on trails in the WNC mountains. Moving your body does something to a conversation that sitting across from someone can't.

Walk-and-talk is exactly what it sounds like. We work while we walk. On trails in the mountains around Asheville — Black Mountain, the Arboretum, the River Arts District greenway, further out when it makes sense.

The case for it isn't complicated. Side-by-side conversation is different from face-to-face. The pressure comes off. You're both moving toward something, literally. You don't have to manage your expression or read theirs. The rhythm of walking does something to the pace of thinking. It loosens things up, lets more come through.

A lot of people find it significantly easier in this format. The conventional coaching setup, sitting across from someone in a room, activates a certain kind of performance. You're being seen, which means you manage what you show. On a trail, that dynamic shifts. People say things walking that they wouldn't have said sitting down. I don't fully understand why, but I've seen it enough to stop questioning it.

Walk-and-talk sessions are still coaching. Same structure, same directness, same work. The location is different. If you want to do this, we meet at a trailhead. You wear whatever you walk in. Sessions run the same 60 or 90 minutes as an office session and cover the same ground.

This is not walk-and-talk therapy. I'm a coach, not a therapist. The distinction matters and I'll explain it in the intro call if it's useful. The short version: coaching is forward-facing and directive. I'll name what I'm seeing. I'll push back. We're working toward something specific, not processing the past.

Walk-and-talk is available as part of any package. If you're local to Asheville or Western North Carolina and you've been curious about this format, it's worth trying. The mountains are good for this kind of work.
